Arthur Barbosa
Music started back when Arthur's mom started singing to try to get him to sleep. Instead of falling asleep he would try and sing along till he got the tune.
From there it was performing as the Scarecrow in Harold W. Riley Elementary School's musical premiere of The Wizard of Oz when he was in Grade 6. His voice was really good but should have played the Tin Man as he wasn't very flexible with his theatrical movement.
Shortly afterwards the next musical journey was with the Calgary Boys Choir under Doug Parnham. Choir members would take the train downtown and play arcade games with fellow members before practices.
Then onto Forest Lawn High School doing the full music program of choir, concert band, and jazz combo which broadened his musical horizons. It was also a way of meeting girls and picking up easy high school credits.
Piano lessons were picked up along the way getting to Grade 8 RCM, by high school graduation. A score of 80% was given but could have been higher if he didn't try to improvise the sight-reading portion of the exam.
Knox United Church Choir was next on the list. He passed the audition by director Frank McKitrick by starting to sing "Happy Birthday".Arthur: "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday...." Frank: "Stop. That's good enough. You are in!"Highlight of being in Knox Choir was playing King Arthur in the church musical "Castle Knox."
He has had very, very small stints in other musical groups such as Encore Chamber Choir and Youth Singers Second Chants.
More recent musical pursuits include organizing the Calgary Carol Festival at Knox United Church since 2020. He also plays keyboards and sings with Calgary Tennis Club's house cover band "40-Love" which is made up of semi-professional tennis players.
